On the morning of June 24th, Hou Zhenfa, Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL), convened a meeting with esteemed experts. The meeting was attended by Vice President Zhou Mingshan, Prof. Wu Haitao, Dean of the School of Business Administration (SBA), and Prof. Ding Shijun. Distinguished participants included Prof. Eric Maskin, the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Economics, Mr. Sajjadul Hassan, Chairman of the Bangladesh Agricultural Economics Association, Prof. Mohammad Jahangir Alam from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Prof. Huang Jikun from the School of Advanced Agricultural Sciences at Peking University, and Prof. Qihong Liu, President of the Chinese Economists Society. The meeting took place in the reception room on the fifth floor of Zhongyuan Building. Associate Prof. Feng Ya from SBA, along with Dr. Sun Huichun, a faculty member, were also present at the meeting.
At the beginning of the meeting, Party Secretary Hou Zhenfa extended a warm welcome to all the renowned international experts on behalf of ZUEL. He pointed that ZUEL is constantly exploring new models of international cooperation, adhering to the principles of openness and collaborative development, and continuously enhancing the level of internationalization in its educational endeavors. The university has established cooperative relationships with over 100 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions. The occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of ZUEL provides a significant and far-reaching opportunity for hosting the 2023 annual conference of the Chinese Economists Society, which is organized by SBA. It is sincerely hoped that the experts will strengthen academic exchanges and intellectual discussions with the faculty and students of our university, and together explore new avenues, create cutting-edge academic topics, and research methodologies.
Prof. Eric Maskin is delighted to be invited to ZUEL to participate in the 2023 annual conference of the Chinese Economists Society and deliver an academic speech. He expressed his excitement for the opportunity to reunite with so many experts and scholars from home and abroad. He also mentioned his strong ties with the Chinese Economists Society and hoped that it will continue to serve as a platform for gathering insights from all parties. Furthermore, he looks forward to visiting Wuhan again, a heroic city, to further understand Chinese culture and witness the charm of Wuhan.
Mr. Sajjadul Hassan is delighted to be at the ZUEL for academic exchange and to participate in the 2023 annual conference of the Chinese Economists Society. He said that Bangladesh's institutions of higher learning, led by Bangladesh Agricultural University, will continue to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with ZUEL in terms of academic exchange and talent development. He encourages more teachers and students to participate in academic research exchanges in fields of economics management and law, thus facilitating the involvement of Chinese and Bangladeshi universities in the construction of the new development framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. The goal is to create an advanced think tank that integrates economics management and law to serve the development of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Prof. Qihong Liu expressed his heartfelt gratitude to SBA of ZUEL for hosting the annual conference of the Chinese Economists Society. It is through the collaborative support of ZUEL, the intellectual contributions of experts and scholars, and the hard work of the conference organizers that this event has successfully opened and proceeded. He emphasized that the scale and depth of this year's conference fully demonstrate the mission and original aspiration of the Chinese Economists Society to serve as a bridge for academic exchanges between China and the United States. The Chinese Economists Society will continue to provide opportunities and platforms for academic exchanges in the fields of economics and related disciplines, both for the two countries and the global community.
Prof. Huang Jikun said that the new opportunities and challenges faced by high-quality development in the context of the new development paradigm are of great academic value and practical significance for seizing the opportunities of a new round of economic growth, building new advantages for national economic development, enhancing the expansion, deepening, and substantive contributions of scientific research, and achieving high-quality development in the economic and social spheres. It is hoped that this conference will serve as an opportunity to enhance domestic and international academic exchanges and cooperation, continuously deepen the breadth, depth, and precision of collaborative innovation and cooperative research among researchers, and ignite high-quality intellectual sparks.
The Chinese Economists Society held its annual conference for the year 2023 from June 23rd to 25th, with the theme “Promoting High-Quality Development of the Chinese Economy.” The conference featured four keynote speeches by three Nobel laureates in economics, Prof. Eric Maskin from Harvard University, Prof. Alvin Roth from Stanford University, Prof. Joshua Angrist from MIT, and Prof. Justin Lin Yifu from Peking University. In addition, there were policy summit forums, deans’ forums from business schools, six invited forums, and 88 parallel forums, highlighting the conference’s four outstanding characteristics: high-end content, cutting-edge perspectives, multiple viewpoints, and large scales.
