Introduction:
The Department of Agricultural Economics and Management (formerly the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management) has a long history, dating back to 1954 when the department was established. The department is one of the few agricultural economics programs in the country.
The Department has two teaching and research offices (Agricultural Economics, and Land Resources Management); one undergraduate program (Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management); three academic master programs (Agricultural Economics and Management, Forestry Economics and Management, and Land Resources Management); one specialized master program (Agriculture); two doctoral programs (Agricultural Economics (independently created under the first-level discipline “Applied Economics” with the approval of the Ministry of Education), and Land Resources Management). In 2008, Agricultural Economics was awarded as an excellent course in Hubei Province; in 2010, the undergraduate program Agricultural and Forestry Economics and Management was identified as a brand major in Hubei Province; in 1998, 2008 and 2013, the discipline Agricultural Economics and Management was awarded as a key discipline of higher education in Hubei.
The Department has a highly capable and well-structured faculty team consisting of 17 faculty members, including 8 professors, 6 associate professors and 7 doctoral supervisors. 2 professors are recipients of special allowance of the State Council; 1 professor is awarded as the Famous Teacher in Hubei; 1 professor is a member of the Agricultural Economics and Management Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education; 1 professor is listed in the Excellent Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education for the New Millennium; 2 professors are leaders of disciplines (academic) of the Ministry of Finance; 1 professor is a young and middle-aged expert with special contribution in Hubei; 3 professors are the New Millennium High-end Talents of Hubei; 1 professor is an outstanding young and middle-aged expert in ethnic affairs of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission; 1 faculty member is a Young Talent in Hubei.
The Department has established several research platforms including Hubei Key Social Science Research Base – WTO and Hubei Development Research Centre, Institute of Urban and Rural Development, Rural Revitalization Research Center, Rural Poverty Research Institute, Rural Land Research Institute, etc. The department has strong research capabilities and characteristics in theoretical and policy regarding agricultural economy, rural household economy and common prosperity, agricultural ecological economy and green development, etc.
In recent years, faculty members of the department have undertaken more than 60 projects related to agriculture and rural development, including funding from the National Social Science Key Procurement Program (2), the National Social Science Foundation of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Soft Science Program, the Social Science Program of the Ministry of Education, the National Social Nonprofit Fund, and other national and provincial and ministry-level projects.
Many studies have been published, including more than 200 papers in well-known journals at home and abroad, as well as 30 monographs and textbooks. Several studies have won national, provincial, and ministry-level awards, including the First Prize for Development Research in Hubei, the Ministry of Education Award for Outstanding Social Science Research in Higher Education, the Hubei Provincial Award for Outstanding Social Science Research, the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and more than 30 other provincial and ministerial awards. Since the 1990s, the department has collaborated with Fukushima University, the University of Canterbury, the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other overseas universities or research institutions to establish exchanges and cooperation. The department has an excellent reputation in the academic community.
