Introduction:

The Department of Tourism Management was founded in 2002. The Department was based on economics, management and law, the three advantageous disciplines of the University. The enrollment of undergraduate students began in 2000, while the enrollment of master and doctorate students began in 2002. The Department has two teaching and research offices (Tourism Management and Hotel Management) and one research institute (Tourism Industry and Planning). The Tourism Management major is a key discipline and talent cultivation major for strategic pillar industries of Hubei. The Department is the only Department of Tourism Management with doctor’s degree awarding right of Hubei, and one of the first institutions that offers Master of Tourism Administration (MTA) programme in China. The Tourism Management Major enrolls students across all degree levels of undergraduate, master and doctorate. There is also a tourism management post-doctoral research station. The Department receives prestigious reputation in the nationwide tourism academic circle. In the meantime, it has established international cooperation and exchange relations with overseas universities such as the University of Nevada Las Vegas and University of Washington in the U.S, laying the foundation for cultivating talents with an international vision.


After nearly two decades of development, the Department has made great progress in terms of discipline development, academic research, talent cultivation and social services. All the 12 full-time teachers have a doctor’s degree, and several of them have overseas academic visit or study experiences. Tourism planning, tourism marketing, rural tourism, and tourism standardization have become key advantages and features of the Department. The department has won the first prize of provincial teaching achievement award, the first prize of teaching achievement and the first prize of postgraduate teaching project at the university-level. It is worth mentioning that one teacher is a member of the Undergraduate Teaching Committee of the Ministry of Education. With concerted efforts of the faculty and great support of the School and the University, the Department has made exemplary achievements in academic research. Up to now, publications by teachers of the Department include 31 books, 12 state-compiled textbooks, and nearly 300 research articles covering the major areas in tourism management. Teachers of the Department have widely published in top international journals such as Tourism Management, Annals of Tourism Research, International Journal of Hospitality Management, etc. Teachers of the Department have led or participated in 13 national, provincial or ministry-level research projects and over 200 tourism planning projects. Annual research grants of the Department amount reach two million yuan. In 2015, the National Tourism Administration (now the Ministry of Culture and Tourism) approved the founding of the National Tourism Standardization Base in the School of Business Administration, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. The Department of Tourism Management is the backbone of the Base, which has access to all available resources of the University. The Base is cultivating standardized talents and providing standardized management solution for the tourism sector of the nation.
