In March, 2021, a “work and rest” public welfare competition was held by the Volunteer Association of SBA for the undergraduates of the Class of 2020 and an in-person defense was held on April 18 in order to implement labor education, foster a civilized atmosphere, and promote the positive energy of society, and at the same time to encourage young students to study and practice labor education, and to guide young volunteers to actively participate in volunteer activities.
The competition included three stages, planning, practicing and evaluation. In the planning stage, each class determined the content of its activity and wrote a plan based on labor and public welfare. Their plans, revised by the Secretary Department of the Volunteer Association of SBA, could be implemented by the classes in person. During the practicing stage, the classes carried out their activities in various forms including charity sales, campus cleaning, and hospital assistance according to their plans under the one-to-one supervision by the Volunteer Association. Afterwards, the classes wrote summaries and made videos and copywriting online to reflect on their activities and expand the influence of public welfare. In the final defense and evaluation stage, each class selected a keynote speaker to report on its activity, and the winning classes of this competition were chosen.
The defense of the competition started at 14:00 on April 18, and each speaker came to the stage and responded. The speakers gave a detailed introduction to their activities, and introduced their activities to the judges and participants, as well as their understanding and practice on labor education. The Class 2001 from the Management Science launched an activity by tutoring the children of ethnic minority workers in logistics. The children were enlightened by labor education, and said in an interview, “labor is to obtain wealth by hands”, “work is doing meaningful things”. The volunteers from the Class 2001 also experienced the difficulty of teaching in the process of imparting knowledge, and deeply realized the significance of labor education and public welfare activities. The speaker of the Class 2008 from the Department of Business Management told a touching moment that when they donated charity sales, the security guards of the welfare house conveyed the gratitude on behalf of the children in Wuhan dialect, which made them truly feel the gratitude from the recipients.
After the presentation of each class, the judges asked questions and made suggestions to the speakers on the public welfare, labor education, and the difficulties and solutions in the activities.
At 16:30 pm, 13 speakers finished their defense. According to the comprehensive scoring based on the opinions of the judges, the submitted materials and the effect of the activities, the Class 2001 from the Management Science won the first prize, the Class 2003 and the Class 2004 from the Department of Business Management won the second prize, and the Class 2007 and the Class 2008 from the Department of Business Management as well as the Class 2002 from the Department of Economics and Trade won the third prize. Then the public welfare competition ended successfully.
This public welfare competition vigorously carried forward the spirit of model workers and the value of work in the new form of combining labor and public welfare. Moreover, it provided opportunities for students to devote themselves to volunteer services, promoted the coordinated and healthy development of the class, and guided the students to enrich their spiritual life, improve their ideological level, and increase their knowledge in the process of labor education and volunteer service.
